A Private Island. Ten Bandas. One Reef.

There are hotels that offer privacy. And then there are hotels that ARE privacy. &Beyond Mnemba Island falls into the second category — a tiny private island off the northeast coast of Zanzibar, accessible only by boat, with just ten hand-built bandas (beach cottages) and a surrounding coral reef that is among the most pristine in the Indian Ocean.

This is not a resort in any conventional sense. There is no lobby, no reception desk, no lineup of sun loungers. There are ten bandas, a dining area, a dive centre, and a beach. That's it. The island is small enough to walk around in ten minutes. And that is the entire point.

Mnemba has long been one of Zanzibar's most famous snorkeling destinations — day boats bring tourists from across the island to snorkel the reef that surrounds it. But as a guest of the lodge, the reef is yours. At dawn, before the day boats arrive. At dusk, after they leave. And at night, when the water is dark and the reef transforms into something else entirely.

The Reef: Mnemba's Reason for Being

Mnemba Atoll is a designated marine conservation area, and the reef that surrounds the island is one of the healthiest in the western Indian Ocean. The protection shows. The coral is vibrant — brain corals, stagshorns, fans, and soft corals in colours that seem impossible underwater. The fish life is abundant and varied: butterflyfish, angelfish, parrotfish, wrasse, and the occasional reef shark patrolling the deeper edges.

But Mnemba's real stars are the dolphins and turtles. Bottlenose and spinner dolphins are frequently sighted around the island, and snorkeling alongside them — when they choose to approach — is one of the most thrilling underwater experiences available anywhere. Green and hawksbill turtles nest on the island's beaches and are regular companions on the reef.

The lodge's dive centre offers diving and snorkeling directly from the beach — no boat needed for the house reef. For those who want to explore further, boat trips take guests to outer reef sites along the Zanzibar coast.

The Bandas

The ten bandas are hand-built from local materials — Zanzibari wood, palm thatch, and coral stone. Each is a spacious, open-air beach cottage with a king bed, en-suite bathroom with outdoor shower, overhead fans (no air conditioning — the ocean breeze provides natural cooling), and a wide veranda with direct beach access.

The design is deliberately rustic-luxury. This is not marble and chrome. This is wood and thatch and sand, with comfortable furnishings and thoughtful touches that make the space feel like a very upscale beach hut rather than a hotel room. If you need air conditioning, WiFi that streams Netflix, and the conveniences of a modern resort, Mnemba is not for you. If you want to fall asleep to the sound of the Indian Ocean and wake up to a private beach, it is perfect.

Standard Bandas

Eleven standard bandas, each positioned for maximum privacy along the beachfront. Simple, beautiful, and perfectly adequate — you will spend most of your time in the water or on the beach.

Family Banda

One larger banda with additional sleeping space for families (children 12+ are welcome in this unit).

Dining

All meals and drinks are included in the rate — and this is genuine all-inclusive, not a watered-down version. The food is fresh, local, and beautifully prepared, with a Zanzibari influence that makes every meal feel like a discovery. Zanzibari cuisine is a fusion of African, Arab, Indian, and Persian influences — spiced fish curries, pilau rice, fresh tropical fruit, and the kind of seafood that comes from the ocean to your plate in hours.

Dining is communal and intimate, with tables set on the beach or in the lodge's open-air dining area. Private dinners on the beach can be arranged.

Who Is This For?

Mnemba is for the traveller who has done luxury resorts and wants something rarer: a genuinely private island experience. For the snorkeler who wants a house reef without day-trippers. For the couple on a honeymoon who want to be the only two people on a beach. For the diver who wants pristine, protected coral.

It is not for those who need modern amenities, air conditioning, or a variety of restaurants. Mnemba is deliberately low-tech and high-touch. The luxury is in the exclusivity, the reef, and the simplicity — not in the thread count.

Getting There

Zanzibar International Airport (ZNZ) receives direct flights from London, Istanbul, Doha, Dubai, and several African hubs. From the airport, it is approximately one hour by road to the boat departure point, followed by a short boat transfer to the island. The entire journey is included in the rate.

Best Time to Visit

June to October is the dry season — calm seas, excellent visibility, and cooler temperatures. December to February is also excellent, with warm water and good visibility. March to May is the long rainy season, with heavier rains and reduced visibility.

The Verdict

&Beyond Mnemba Island is one of the most exclusive island experiences in Africa. It is not cheap — $1,650/night puts it in the ultra-luxury category — but for that price you get a private island, a pristine reef, dolphins and turtles, and an experience that very few people in the world will ever have. If Lisa wants to feel like she has arrived — not just at a destination, but at a level of travel that most people only dream about — Mnemba is the answer.
