The Shore-Snorkeling Capital of the Caribbean
Bonaire is not like other Caribbean islands. There are no mega-resorts, no golf courses, no cruise-ship crowds clogging the streets. Bonaire is a diver's island — a Dutch-Caribbean outpost 50 miles off the coast of Venezuela, where the entire coastline is a protected marine park and 86 marked shore-snorkeling and diving sites ring the island like a string of underwater jewels.

The island's philosophy is simple: you rent a vehicle, you drive to a numbered site, you park, you walk in, and you snorkel. No boat needed. No guide required. No fee. Just you, the water, and some of the healthiest coral reef remaining in the Caribbean.
And in the middle of it all, in the capital Kralendijk, is Boutique Hotel Sonrisa — a 12-suite, adults-only, Swiss-run property that is the perfect base for a snorkeling-focused holiday. Five minutes from the airport. Walking distance to town. Walking distance to the harbour. And run with the kind of precise, attentive, genuinely caring hospitality that only a Swiss operation can deliver.

The Snorkeling: 86 Sites and Counting
This is why you come to Bonaire. And this is why Sonrisa is the perfect base.

Bonaire's shore-snorkeling system is unique in the Caribbean. The island's entire coastline — both the leeward (west) side and the windward (east) side — is marked with numbered yellow-painted stones indicating snorkel and dive sites. You rent a car (Sonrisa can arrange this), pick up a site map, and drive. Each site has parking, and entry is from the shore — over rocks, sand, or a small jetty.
The reef is spectacular. Bonaire has been a protected marine park since 1979, and the protection shows. The coral is among the healthiest in the Caribbean — brain corals, elkhorn corals, fire corals, and soft corals in abundance. The fish life is extraordinary: parrotfish (the island's national fish), angelfish, butterflyfish, trunkfish, trumpetfish, tarpon, and, on the deeper sites, eagle rays and turtles.
Highlights for snorkelers include:
- 1000 Steps: A dramatic site accessible via a long staircase (not literally 1000 steps, but it feels like it). Excellent coral and abundant fish. The view alone is worth the trip.
- Karpata: A shallower site with some of the best coral formations on the island. Often uncrowded.
- Oil Slick Leap: A site with a small cliff entry into deep water — dramatic and rewarding. Turtles and large fish are common.
- Salt Pier: Snorkel among the pylons of an active salt-loading pier. The structure attracts fish and the coral growth on the pylons is beautiful. One of the island's most popular sites.
- Angel City: A double reef system — snorkel over the first reef, cross a sand channel, and find a second reef. Unique topography.
The east coast (Washington-Slagbaai National Park) offers more adventurous snorkeling — rougher entries, bigger fish, and fewer people. The park itself is worth a day trip for the dramatic landscape, flamingo colonies, and remote beaches.
Dive Centre
Sonrisa operates its own dive centre, providing equipment rental, guided dives, snorkel trips, and courses. The centre is well-organized and efficient — Swiss standards applied to Caribbean diving. Equipment is high-quality and well-maintained. The instructors are experienced and focused on small groups and individual attention.
For snorkelers, the dive centre is a resource — site recommendations, equipment rental (mask, fins, snorkel), and guided snorkel tours for those who prefer not to go independently.
The Pool and Gardens
The hotel's pool is inviting and well-maintained, set within mature tropical gardens. It's the perfect place to rinse off the salt water after a day of snorkeling and to enjoy a cold drink as the sun sets. The pool area is intimate — 12 suites means never more than a handful of guests — and the atmosphere is relaxed and convivial without being social.

Dining
Sonrisa does not have a restaurant, but Kralendijk's dining scene is within walking distance. Bonaire's culinary offering reflects its Dutch-Caribbean heritage — Indonesian rijsttafel, fresh seafood, Dutch cheeses, and Caribbean staples. The hotel's hosts are excellent at recommending restaurants and snorkeling sites — they know the island intimately and are genuinely invested in helping guests make the most of their stay.
Service
This is where Sonrisa shines. The Swiss hosts — Désirée and Reto — run the hotel with a combination of precision and warmth that is rare in the Caribbean. Everything works. Everything is clean. Everything is on time. But it is also personal — they learn your name, they remember your plans, they recommend sites based on the day's conditions, and they make you feel like a guest in their home rather than a unit of occupancy.
Who Is This For?
Sonrisa is for the independent snorkeler or diver who wants a clean, comfortable, well-run base from which to explore Bonaire's reefs. It is not a resort — there is no beach on-site, no restaurant, no evening entertainment. What there is, instead, is 86 snorkeling sites within a 30-minute drive, a rental car in the car park, and a Swiss host who knows exactly where to send you based on the wind direction.
For Lisa, this is the option that offers the most snorkeling variety. Instead of one house reef, she gets 86. Every day, a different reef. Every day, a different landscape. And Bonaire's coral is genuinely healthy — protected for over 40 years, it is the Caribbean's benchmark for reef conservation.
Getting There
Flamingo International Airport (BON) receives direct flights from Amsterdam (KLM), and connecting flights via Curacao, Aruba, and several US hubs (Miami, Houston, Atlanta). The airport is a 5-minute drive from Sonrisa — one of the shortest airport-to-hotel transfers anywhere in the Caribbean.
Best Time to Visit
Bonaire is a year-round destination, with water temperatures consistently 27-29°C. The dry season (February to August) offers the calmest conditions for shore snorkeling, with the leeward coast particularly sheltered. September to January can bring wind and chop on some sites, but the leeward coast remains accessible. Visibility is consistently 20-30 metres year-round.
The Verdict
Boutique Hotel Sonrisa is not trying to be a resort, and it doesn't need to be. It is a perfectly executed small hotel in the shore-snorkeling capital of the Caribbean, run by people who genuinely care, in a location that puts 86 world-class reefs within a short drive. For the independent snorkeler who wants variety, quality, and freedom, it is hard to imagine a better base anywhere in the Caribbean.
